Why Pipe Descaling?
Cast iron pipes corrode and buildup the inner lining walls with rust, minerals, grease, and gunk over time. Corrosion can be caused by regular use such as contact with moisture and rusting that will naturally occur. As time goes on, these issues tend to worsen, and the pipe becomes weaker.
Pipes that are in constant contact with water that will cause rust naturally over time. Rust not only looks corrosive but causes blockages and slows down the rate at which the water flows through the pipes. This can cause the pipes to back up or drastically slow the water flow.
The Descaling Process
Descaling uses a rotating cable with attachments at the end to help scrape off the corrosion from the inner walls of the pipe. It is vital to utilize the descaler instead of a jetter because with time, the corrosion of the cast iron will significantly weaken the strength of the pipes and hydro-jetting can further this issue. The descaling process is specially designed for cast iron pipes and as shown below, produces the best results possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do cast iron sewer pipes last?
Cast iron is heavy duty material, and the pipes will typically last anywhere from 50-65 years. To help prolong the life of your pipes, it is essential to have descaling done frequently. Descaling pipes helps open the sewer line back up and ensure proper flow.
What causes cast iron sewer pipes to corrode?
Cast iron will corrode when it comes into contact with liquids. The process doesn’t happen immediately, but over time will cause a buildup from water and waste.
What is the difference between descaling and hydro-jetting?
Hydro jetting works great on non-cast iron pipes. However, with cast iron, the pipes are more fragile, and the descaling technique works best.
How to descale water pipes?
We use a Picote Milling Machine that goes into your sewer pipes. The machine is similar to a large plumbers snake, but the tip has chains and equipment attached to it that will quickly and safely clean your cast iron pipes.
Is cast iron plumbing the same as galvanized?
No, a galvanized pipe has a protective zinc coating over it to prevent the pipe from rusting. Cast iron pipes will rust over time and therefore need descaling to help clean them and open the pipes back up.
Is cast iron plumbing bad?
No, cast iron can be extremely durable and last almost a lifetime. However, over time, cast iron pipes can and will corrode, causing the pipes to restrict the flow. Having your cast iron pipes descaled will help by opening the pipes back up and getting the flow moving again.
